Do green campaigners need a new strategy?

a new green strategy? An article in The Guardian newspaper today confirms our long held suspicion that despite being convinced of the risks of climate change (according to a recent poll, 9 out of 10 people believe it is a problem), the majority of people aren’t really prepared to make any kind of sacrifice to deal with the problem - car journeys, aviation, consumer consumption and home energy usage are all rising.

And attempts to fight climate change are further confounded by the fact that Governments are unprepared to risk their popularity by making decisions that will have any real impact - governments are approving new runways, drilling for more oil and undermining carbon trading schemes by over allocating credits.

Since little seems to have been achieved by doomsday scenarios to spur people into action, we think it might be time for green campaigners to come up with some new strategies to motivate the public into fighting climate change:

Suggestion 1 - seek help with the consequences, not the cause

In the 80’s it would have been hard to motivate people to donate money to the third world just by showing bad weather forecasts. But millions responded to pictures on their televisions of starving children and record amounts were donated to charity during Live Aid, and other similar events. (let’s forget the fact that the money hardly helped)

Sad, but true. Maybe it is really time to give up on prevention and focus on cure?

Suggestion 2 - make being green cool

Let’s face it, for most people a green lifestyle is a bit too wholemeal. Most people lead busy lives and just don’t have the time to make the kind of compromises currently required.

But being green can be easy, and can be cool. Toyota proved this with the Prius - a green marketing phenomena which appealed to the gadget loving mid 30’s plus male with its computer game style power display and spooky near silent operation. (let’s forget the fact that it’s not actually that much better for the environment).

Suggestion 3 - make not being green un-cool

The anti-smoking lobby have been successful in convincing people not only that smoking is bad for you (which it is), but also that it is anti-social (which it is), and have stigmatised smokers to such an extent that many countries and states have successfully outlawed smoking in public places with barely a whimper of complaint from the public.

Developing the same kind of negative image around SUVs, long-haul holidays and generally enjoying yourself could be an effective way to change public behaviour. (let’s forget about the fact that many people still think that smoking is cool).

We are sure there are more possibilities - what are your ideas for new green strategies?

People may accept that Global Warming is man made but I’m not sure that indicates they really understand the issue. I bet if the survey asked people if a worldwide 2 or 3 degree Celsius rise in temperature would cause any problems, you would find few who would think it so.

People are incredibly ignorant about this and other environmental issues. It isn’t because environmentalists have
been too alarmist. It’s because the media and the politicians have been so pathetic on the issue.

If my house is burning, I don’t want to calm people down, I want people to understand it’s a damn emergency and we need to get off our butts now.

Green Team: Lets try something new to get our point across to people!

Response: No way we need to be even more alarmist! People are not caring because they are uninformed and not scared enough yet, because “powerful” institutions are blocking our progress.

All environmentalists know is alarmism, fear and corporate conspiracy, it has been the hallmark of environmental causes for years. That is what has kept them on the fringes and the subject of water cooler humour for so long. In all the years they have never figured out how to talk to the population because they are elitist by nature.

This is why…”People are incredibly ignorant about this and other environmental issues”..you talk down to, not with, them and try to appeal to emotional response. That is a big part of the disconnect and why the issue has stalled.

Developed countries have a society that on a whole is much more intelligent and sophisticated then you give them credit for, your sense of elevated morality and infallable prophecy only distances you from the people you are trying to reach.

My advice is to stop “dumbing down” your message, be honest in your statements and be specific in what you are asking for.

The oceans are dying. Deserts are expanding. Greenland is melting faster than all predictions. Temperate glaciers around the world, which supply water to hundreds of millions, are quickly disappearing. Rain forests that host a large percentage of the planets biodiversity are shrinking rapidly. The list goes on and on.

This isn’t alarmist, this is fact. People need to understand. Coddling them in their ignorance isn’t helpful in the least.

Thank you for making my point so elegantly.

All you know how to do is make alarmist claims like a blind man with a machine gun spraying bullets and praying you hit someone.

I really did love the way you embraced the concept of treating people with some intellectual respect.

Never trust anyone who calls themselves any kind of “‘mentalist”.

“Greenland is melting faster than all predictions”. I never knew a country could melt… Now I really am scared… can my country melt? Will I fall into the sea? I better learn to swim…

Seriously though, we need to distinguish between “green strategies” and the natural evolution of humanity.

Most of the strategies being proposed under the climate change agenda are simply re-hashes of old colonial tricks to remove power from indigenous peoples.

The best green strategy would be for Greens to accept that their camp is riddled with anti-developmental socialism, and then go out there and study economics and development for a while.

Then come up with some ideas as to how we can achieve our aims without the centralisation of power that most in the Red camp would agree are deeply worrying.

An example: how can the built environment be designed so that our children get outside and play, instead of staying at home getting fat and playing computer games / watching TV and getting fat on junk food? Solve problems like this, and you’ll probably see the climate change problem disappear at the same time.

Oh, Greens - ever heard of the Millennium Developmpent Goals?

“I never knew a country could melt… Now I really am scared… can my country melt? Will I fall into the sea? I better learn to swim…”

Clever Metyu, you should have been a comedian.

“All you know how to do is make alarmist claims like a blind man with a machine gun spraying bullets and praying you hit someone.”

Okay ClimateHeretic how would you generalize the earth’s environmental degradation in a short paragraph? Which particular point do you disagree with?

You assume too much, first that in relation to climate change I believe the world has degraded.

Next that even if I did believe as you do, that a “short paragraph” does the isssue justice.

All of your claims can and have been explained by scientific studies that find the current states of “oceans”, “deserts”, “Ice Caps”, “glaciers” and “Rain Forests” are results of non-climate related issues or are well within the range of natural varaiability in response to climate, based on historical observations and reconstructions, not forecasting and computer modelling. That includes rates of change in the climate system itself.

“You assume too much”

Actually I didn’t mean to imply this was all caused by climate change. Deforestation for instance and the plundering of the oceans mainly have other man made causes.

My point is that people need to realize the earth’s environment is degrading fast. I don’t think people need to be coddled which I think this article implied.
