How to Maintain a Trendy Green Image
A lesson from German Chancellor Angela Merkel
The ‘Klimakanzlerin’ (Climate Chancellor) is Europe’s answer to Al Gore. Germans are renowned for their environmental savvy, leading the world in recycling and in the development of many green technologies. Frau Markel’s policies are in her own words “an example for other countries”.

So let’s have a look at some of those examples
- Resist calls to place speed limits on the famous German ‘Autobahnen’, indulging your nation’s passion for fast cars and completely failing to incentivise your high-tech car industry to focus on efficiency instead of performance. -5 green image points
- Keep quiet about plans to build up to 24 new coal fired power plants, and talk up your renewable energy industry instead. Never mind the fact that Germany is home to six of Europe’s ten most polluting power stations. -5 green image points
- Approve $1bn in funding for clean energy research. It’s probably not as much as Google will spend, but it’s a hefty sum. + 5 green image points
- Use your German industrial talents to foster an active renewable energy business employing up to 214,000 people, build the world’s biggest solar power station and improve your renewable energy production level by a factor of 100 in 10 years. +10 green image points
A lady with a balance of +5 green image points who also likes fast cars? Sounds trendy enough to us.
Later on TalkClimateChange Al Gore will be taking our Green Image test – how will he fare?
